CANFIELD - Dr. Patrick Charles Haggerty died peacefully on March 14, 2019, at the age of 79 with his family by his side.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019, at 9:15 a.m. the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Catholic Church.

Dr. Haggerty spent most of his life in Youngstown, where he was born and raised and returned after dental school to start his family and practice periodontics for 51 years.

Dr. Haggerty was born at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on June 9, 1939, to Charles and Elizabeth Haggerty.

He attended St. Edward’s Elementary School and Ursuline High School, where he graduated in 1957. He attended Case Western Reserve University, previously known as Western Reserve University, for his undergraduate studies and graduated from Case Western Reserve Dental School in 1963.

Following graduation in 1963, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain.

After a one year residency program in Youngstown, he pursued studies in periodontics at Boston University. Dr. Haggerty graduated in 1966, and began his active duty at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas.

In 1968, he returned home to Youngstown to open a private periodontal practice where he actively saw patients until Feb., 2019.

Dr. Haggerty was and will remain an icon in the Youngstown dental community. He practiced periodontics and was a pioneer in implantology. Throughout his career, he lectured on implants and periodontal surgical practices.

Dr. Haggerty is also published in several dental journals and a contributing author on dental textbooks. He served in leadership capacities in several professional organizations including, president of the Corydon Palmer Dental Society, diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology, the Dental Hygiene School, and The American Society of Periodontist.

In 1986, he was elevated to Fellowship Status within the International Congress of Oral implantologist which is one of the highest honors a professional society can bestow on a dental professional involved in oral implantology.

In addition to his professional career, Dr. Haggerty served on several community associations including serving two terms as president of Tippecanoe Country Club, the Youngstown Symphony Society, American Cancer Society, Alumni Representative of Case Western Reserve University Dental School, American Cancer Society and Dental Chairman United Appeal Drive.

In his free time, Dr. Haggerty was a sports enthusiast both as an athlete and a spectator. He played football at both Ursuline High School and Western Reserve. He had a lifelong passion for golf which began on the Ursuline golf team. Dr. Haggerty also loved to play squash, racquet ball and to downhill ski. When not playing sports, he was an avid reader of history and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Melissa Haggerty of nine years; and his dog Sonny.

He is also survived by his three children and eight grandchildren from his first marriage to Madeleine Bertovich Haggerty.

His children, Shawn and Jane Haggerty, Michael and Christine Haggerty, Shannon and John Geller; and grandchildren PJ, Kacey, Emily, Madeleine, Johnny, Nicholas, Michael and Mia, will miss him dearly.

He is also fondly remembered by his two stepsons, Vincent (Kendra) Dravecky, and Frank (Candace) Dravecky, and their daughters, Harper and Harlow.

Patrick is also survived by his only sibling, JoAnn Leach of Warren; sister-in-law and spouses, Stephanie and Craig Knebe and Janice and Norris Anderson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Haggerty’s honor to Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House in Poland.

Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
