MADEIRA BEACH, FLA. - Joseph Kastanek, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Jan. 3, 2016, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va., while visiting with his family in Virginia for the holidays.
"Joe" was born in Salem on Dec. 18, 1930, the son of Louis and Antonia (Kahoun) Kastanek.
On June 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to Alyce McKinley, of Youngstown. They were married for 33 years until her death on July 10, 1988.
He also was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Moon, of Portland, Ore.; and his brothers, Frank and Anton Kastanek of Salem.
He was a 1948 graduate of Salem High School and a 1960 graduate of Youngstown State University, with a B.S. in Engineering.
He served with distinction in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
During his career as a metallurgical engineer, Joe held positions with US Steel, Reactive Metals Inc., and Titanium Metals Corporation. He was co-founder of Shasta Inc., a Pittsburgh-based titanium mill. For over 20 years and until his retirement, he served as vice president for Quality Control at NF&M Titanium, an international company based in Monaca, Pa.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill Kastanek and her spouse, Ted Sudol, of Harrisonburg, Va.; his son, Eric Kastanek and his partner, Carol Sharp, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Allison Bechtel (Charles) of Crozet, Va.; Lindsey Harding (Shawn) of Athens, Ga., Brendan Sudol (Elizabeth) of Arlington, Va., and Claire Sudol of Harrisonburg, Va.; and, five great-grandchildren, Riley, Adrian, and Sidney Harding of Athens, and Cassidy and Chase Bechtel of Crozet.
For the past 20 years, Joe lived in Madeira Beach. He was a member of the Faith Community Church in Seminole, Fla. His number one passion was golf, and he enjoyed his time on the links at the Mainlands Golf Club in Clearwater, Fla.
Joe's family welcomes friends to join them for a funeral service in the Chapel at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman on Saturday, Jan. 9, at noon. Committal will follow immediately after the service.
