Surrounded by family members, Adeline Rose Chiody Matteo passed away on Oct. 21 in North Side Hospital after bravely fighting against a series of complications following recent surgery. She was 92 years young.
Born in Youngstown on April 14, 1916, Addie, the daughter of Peter A. and Rose Christy Chiody, grew up in Niles, moving there at the age of four and graduating from Niles McKinley High School in 1932. She returned to Youngstown in 1937 where she was subsequently employed by W.T. Grant Co., Citizens Budget, and Bell Finance, from which she retired in 1981. An Austintown resident since 1960, Adeline spent this past year living with and being cared for by her devoted sister Evelyn.
Addie, a parishioner of St. Joseph Parish, was an active club member in Willow Wood Garden Club, the St. Joseph Goldenagers for which she served as Treasurer and Diamon Back formerly Leffingwell Hills Country Club, where she played golf until the age of 85. A marvelous seamstress -- she could mend ANYTHING! -- she loved dancing, word games, and playing bridge. One of her favorite pastimes, however, was spending time with her great-great neice and nephew, Alexis and Brandon Hudock, to whom she affectionately known as "Aunt N' Addie, the Play Lady".
Adeline will be sadly missed by her son Michael J., Jr. and his wife Karen Matteo, her grandchildren Stephen and wife Jamie and Craig, her great grandchild Madeline Grace, her beloved sisters Evelyn Menaldi and Matilda "Lee" Campbell, and her devoted neices and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Michael J., Sr. whom she married on July 5, 1939, her parents, her sister Pearl Martin, her nephew Dominic Strollo, and her cousin Carmen Basile, with whom she was raised.
Famiy and friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Friday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Boardman-Canfield Chapel and on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 AM at St. Joseph Church in Austintown, after which all are invited to remain for a Mass of Celebration in honor of Addie's life at 10 AM.
A private burial will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield.
