AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Agnes T. Kachurek, 83 who died Friday evening at her home surrounded by her children.
Agnes was born Jan. 19, 1930, in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Catherine (Geargash) Gromofsky.
She attended St. Matthias Parish and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. She worked at McKelvey's Department Store and later as an assistant chef at Tippecanoe Country Club and the Holiday Inn.
Agnes was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and its Senior Citizens Club. She was also a member of Branch No. 308 Jednota, the First Catholic Slovak Union and a 500-bid card club for nearly 50 years.
She enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles and Scrabble, but most of all, she as a gentle, quite mother who believed in her children and guided them with wisdom and love.
Her husband, Joseph R Kachurek, whom she married May 30, 1953, died May 30, 2007.
She is survived by three daughters, Sandra J. (Robert) Liptak of Springfield, Diane M. Szakacs of Austintown, and Joanne M. (Brian) Reiser of Canfield; three sons, Robert J. Annamarie) of Lyndhurst, Terence R. (Jacqueline) of Marengo, and Patrick W. (Lynda) of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Margaret O'Masta of Youngstown and Dorothy Blasko of Struthers; a sister-in-law, Emmalou Gromofsky of Youngstown; six grandchildren, Nicholas Delio, Natalie (Jose') Manzanares, Laura (Michael) Pinto, Catherine and John Kachurek, Alexandria Szakacs, and Trevor and Austen Reiser; and four great-grandchildren, Lucy and Brady Delio, Robert Pinto and Manuel Manzanares.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Gromofsky; and five sisters, Florence and Rosemary Gromofsky, Anne Matus, Catherine Brumert and Louise Foreman.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Memorial Fund in Agnes's memory.
