Albert Brusko

AUSTINTOWN ? Prayers will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Albert ?Abe? Brusko, 91, who passed away Saturday evening at Briarfield at Ashley Circle.
Abe was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Youngstown, the son of Michael and Catherine Vitikas Brusko.
Abe graduated from Chaney High School in 1936 as a star athlete in basketball, football and softball. He captained the first Chaney City Series championship team in basketball in 1935 to 1936, and starred on the first Chaney championship softball team the same year. He was also an All-City star in football during the 1935 season. After high school, Abe was drafted into and played minor league baseball in Dayton before being inducted into and serving in World War II.
While serving in World War II, he was selected to play in Wembly Stadium in England in 1943, for a ground force, Air Force baseball game for the Duke of Gloucester?s Sports Committee. This resulted in his being recognized in a book written by an Englishman in 1999, titled ?Images of Sports? background of baseball, in Europe during World War II.
In 1995, Abe was further given the honor of being inducted into the Chaney High School Hall of Fame for his athletic contributions. He belonged to the Senior Citizens of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and was also a member of the Eagle?s Association.
Abe leaves his wife of 64 years, Marjorie ?Madge? Parrett Brusko, formerly of County of Wilshire, Salisbury, England, and many special nieces and nephews who dearly loved him.
He was also preceded in death by his mother and father; five sisters and two brothers, Catherine Vitikas and Michael Brusko, Mary Pabin, Catherine Kurdila, Peg Augustine, Helen Zitello, Amelia Bezilla, Michael Brusko and Joseph Brusko.
