Albert Campana

February 25, 1926 — April 7, 2009

Struthers - A memorial Mass will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 77 E Lucius Ave. in Youngstown, for Albert L. ³Big Al² Campana, 83, who passed away Tuesday morning at his home surrounded by his family.

Al was born Feb. 25, 1926 in Hubbard, the son of Andy and Angela Carano Campana.

Al graduated from Hubbard High School. He served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Al was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 93. He played football at Youngstown College from 1946 to 1949. Al scored 39 career touchdowns at Youngstown State University, averaging nearly 6.5 yards per rush. He was named to the Little All-America squad three times, twice earning first-team honors. Al played for NFL¹s Chicago Bears in 1950 to 1952, and the Chicago Cardinals in 1953. He was inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986, and the Trumbull County Hall of Fame in 2003. After retiring from football, he served a distinguished role as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Struthers Schools.

Al leaves his wife, the former Lucille Sacomani, whom he married Nov. 26, 1949; his children TJ Debbie Campana of Struthers, James R. April Vitale Campana Sr. of Youngstown, Maryann Richard Demesko of Poland; his two sisters, Maryellen Hoolihan of Champion and Norma Clemente of Struthers; his brother, Tom Campana of Kent; 10 granchildren, Mandi Marie, Ty, Brooke, Candace and Dalton Campana, James R. Campana II, Nicole and Melodie Campana and Laila and Carmen Tanferno; and a great-grandson, Tristan Campana.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Mandi Campana; his sister Carmel Garchar; and his four brothers, John, Jars, Ralph and George Campana.

Friends may call Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, material tributes may take the form of donations to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.

Arrangements are being handled by Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Poland Chapel.
