CANFIELD - Mr. Amrik Singh Dhillon, 89, of Canfield, died after a brief illness on Wednesday morning, December 16, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Boardman Campus.
Mr. Dhillon, affectionately known as "Darji," was born in British Colonial India present-day Pakistan on February 11, 1920, to the late Dr. Thakur Singh Dhillon and Karam Kaur Dhillon. He was the youngest of five children and the brother of the late Col. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon of the Indian National Army Azad Hind Fauj, who had a significant influence on Darji's life. He graduated from Garden College, Lahore, Pakistan, before faithfully serving for 37 years in the Punjab Forest Department, in Punjab, India. He retired as a Divisional Forest Officer in 1978.
He immigrated to the United States in March 1986, where he dedicated much of his time towards raising and educating his grandchildren. In addition, he was a respected father-figure to many in the community.
He is survived by five daughters: Rajwant Kaur Gurdial Singh Dhaliwal of Canfield, Surjit Kaur Tejinder Singh Bal of Canfield, Surinder Kaur Rajinder Singh Bhinder of Crown Point, NM, Sarbjit Kaur Balbir Singh Sandhu of Canfield and Jasjit Kaur Sukhbir Singh of Canfield; two sons: Amarjit Singh Pawandeep Kaur Dhillon of Austintown, Diljit Singh Jagjit Kaur Dhillon of Canfield; daughter-in-law, Daljeet Kaur Dhillon wife of his late son Jagjit Singh Dhillon of Canfield; son-in-law, Surjit Singh husband of his late daughter, Beant Kaur of Madhya Pradesh, India; twenty-two grandchildren: Gurdeep Singh of Madhya Pradesh, India, Harpreet Singh Baljinder Kaur Dhaliwal of San Diego, CA, Rupinder Singh Gurjit Kaur of Houston, TX, Mandeep Kaur Himmat Singh Gill of Fresno, CA, Sumeet Kaur Harjeet Singh Brar of Bakersfield, CA, Manjit Singh Dhaliwal of Canfield, Jugdeep Singh Sumeet Kaur Bal of New York, NY, Harchitwant Singh Kamalpreet Kaur Bhinder of Cleveland, OH, Simranjeet Kaur Aaron Ritch of Columbus, OH, Vikramjit Singh Dhillon of Columbus, OH, Namrata Kaur Dhillon of Austintown, Amanpreet Kaur of Canfield, Kanwaldeep Kaur of Canfield, Gurpreet Singh of Canfield, Suneet Kaur Dhillon of Canfield, Divleen Kaur of Canfield, Anoopdeep Singh Bal of Canfield, Harmeet Kaur of Canfield, Harjote Kaur of Canfield, Simardeep Kaur of Canfield, Amolak Singh of Canfield, Ajeet Singh of Canfield; and ten great-grandchildren: Dilraj Singh & Dilveer Singh Dhaliwal of San Diego, CA, Jujhar Singh & Bhajleen Kaur of Houston, TX, Mannat Kaur & Angad Singh Gill of Fresno, CA, Ishaan Singh & Harjaisal Singh Brar of Bakersfield, CA, Hargobind Singh Bal of New York, NY, Jashan Singh Bhinder of Cleveland, OH.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Iqbal; his son, Jagjit, with whom he made his home; his daughter, Beant; and his parents and siblings.
Darji will always be remembered by his family and friends as a loving father and grandfather.
The family will be receiving friends during calling hours on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, from 10:30am to 12pm at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel. Kirtan prayers will be held Tuesday at 12pm at the funeral home.
