AUSTINTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart Of Mary Church in Austintown for Mrs. Ann Damore Mastro, affectionately known as "Aunt Annie," who passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 9, 2012, while in the embrace of her children.
Born on June 20, 1923, to Pietro and Almerinda DeChellis Damore, Ann grew up on Elbern Street and graduated from Chaney High School in 1942.
Prior to her marriage to Frank A. Mastro of Youngstown in 1948, Ann worked in Ravenna, and then raised her two children, Diane and Joe. Even though family came first, Ann ventured into the work force, initially sharing her "culinary skills" with Gina's Pizzeria Uncle Joe's East Side Civics, then Lucente's Cornersburg Pizza, and later with Bindas Sparkle Market. She continued to engage with the public as a food demonstrator for Fisher Fazio.
After the death of her husband in 1983, she sought employment with Guerss City Towel of Girard. Her greatest time spent, however, involved children. "Aunt Annie" took great love and pride in child care, babysitting for countless families, among them the Harmons Scott and Matt, whom she adored. Coaxed by her daughter, she also utilized spare time outside her kitchen to volunteer at Cardinal Mooney High School.
Ann was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, the Senior Citizens, and was still active with the Woman's Auxiliary of Post 3 of the ITAM.
She leaves behind her daughter, Diane Mastro Nard Roy F. Nard Jr., and a son, Joseph A. Mastro, all of Austintown; a brother, Guy F. Damore Jayne; a sister, Mrs. Jean Doinoff Hank; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews from the Damore, Doinoff, Gorczyca, and Obey families, to the Bonamase, Guerrieri, and Mastropietro families.
Her brothers, Louis Damore and Atty. Lawrence Damore, are deceased.
Her family wishes to recognize and thank all their friends and neighbors who generously provided so many accommodations to make Annie's life a part of theirs, Dr. John Vargo and his nursing staff for their constant kindness and concern, Nancy Mashiska for making our mom look beautiful, the Bernard/Sovik family for providing great holidays, Kelly Rowbotham for brightening Annie's better days, and for Carmen Krispinsky, a dear friend, who made the final months of our mother's life so joyous.
Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and on Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to remember Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish or The Alzheimer's Association of Youngstown.
