STRUTHERS - Prayer services will be held Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, for Anthony A. Stewart, 89, who passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning at his home with his family by his side.
Tony was born Feb. 2, 1919 in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Anthony and Minnie Krieska Stewart. He resided in Struthers for 27 years, Teaneck, N.J. for 27 years, prior to that, Bogota, N.J., Jersey City and Hoboken, N.J.
Tony was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was decorated in the Army service with the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle-Eastern Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and was commander in Ridgefield Park, N.J. from 1976 to 1977.
He was the owner of Modern Window Cleaning in Paterson, N.J., retiring in 1981. Tony was an assistant coach for a number of years with Struthers Baseball Leagues, helping his granddaughters¹ softball teams, Mary Burns and Photo Image. He was also an active bocce player, belonging to The Pacentrano Club Bocce League where he held an honorary membership and St. Anthony¹s Bocce League.
Tony leaves his wife, the former Dorothy B. Chmura, whom he married Oct. 9, 1948; a daughter, Doreen Sam Cercone of Struthers; three grandchildren, Catherine Cercone and Teri Cercone, both of Pittsburgh and Mark Cercone of Columbus.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, May Reiner.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery with military honors.
