POLAND - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church in Poland, for Mr. Arthur S. Ivan, 83, formerly of Boardman, who died Monday morning at Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Arthur "Art" was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of Stephen F. and Elizabeth Kozak Ivan.
He attended Chaney High School and graduated from Boardman High School in 1949. Arthur joined the Navy and was on the U.S.S. Wasp Aircraft Carrier, working in the machine shop for four years, during the Korean War. He then went to work at Youngstown Welding as a machinist and later worked at NRM in Columbiana for 25 years, retiring in 1996, as a supervisor and manufacturing engineer. He belonged to the Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME).
Arthur was a member of the Holy Family Church and previously had been a member of St. Cyril and Methodius Church where he served on the finance committee. Arthur was an avid Browns, Indians, Cavs, Ohio State, Youngstown State University and Boardman High School fan, having season tickets to YSU until last year. He enjoyed traveling and spending time at Lake Erie. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping and fishing at local lakes.
Arthur married the love of his life, the former Mary Ellen Smrek, on Aug. 20, 1953.
He leaves his wife, Mary Ellen; four daughters, Mary Ellen (John) Lenton, Theresa E. (Frank) Kishel, Beth (George) Basista and Kathy (Tom) Wysenski, all of Boardman; six grandchildren, Christine (James) Yocum, Jon A. (Kristin) Lenton, Jennifer M. Starr (Timothy) Lewis, Michael (Emily) Cuccarese, Sarah (AJ) Ondrey and Stephen Wysenski; three stepgrandchildren, Stephen (Jodi) Kishel, Christen Kishel and Gee (Rachel) Basista; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Pearl Kocan; and brother Robert W. Ivan.
The family sends special thanks to the nursing staff at St. Elizabeth Health Center Surgical ICU and Hospice of the Valley for their wonderful care and compassion.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, and Thursday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the Holy Family Church.
