Atty. Robert Casey

April 16, 1940 — June 26, 2015

POLAND - Prayers will begin Monday at 10:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church, for Atty. Robert E. Casey, 75, who died Friday afternoon at the Hospice House.

"Bob" was born April 16, 1940, in Youngstown, the son of Thomas P. and Mary (Sheridan) Casey.

He graduated from South High School and then served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Bob earned his Bachelor's Degree in Combined Social Studies from Youngstown State University and later, his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron Law School.

He had taught four years for the Youngstown City School system, served as Mahoning County assistant prosecutor and magistrate of the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court and served as director of the Mahoning County Child Support Enforcement Agency, retiring in 1995.

Bob was a member of the Mill Creek Golf League, an avid member of the Mahoning County democratic party, a lifetime member of the Amvets, a member of the Ohio Cultural Alliance, where he was a trustee, a member of the "Friends of the Boardman Library" and the Tuesday night MVR group. He loved to feed all of the birds and deer in his backyard and was an avid Notre Dame, Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football fan. He was especially proud of his Irish heritage, so he became a citizen of Ireland. Bob had traveled to Ireland three times and had become a published author with his book, An Irish Catholic Remembers and Reflects. Bob made delicious soda bread and had won several prizes for it at the Gathering of the Irish Clans.

He is survived by his wife, the former Jackie Cernock, whom he married Sept. 13, 1975; four daughters, Colleen (Harvey) Brainard, Maureen (Robert) Valiquette, Kathleen Bethel and Jennifer (Christopher) O'Hara, all of Florida; two sisters, Theresa (Nick) Granitto of Youngstown, and Kathleen (Joseph) Eperjesi of Boardman; grandchildren Nicholas, Jessica, Alyssa and Zachary Bethel, Colleen Marie Casey, Liam and Nolan O'Hara; brothers-in-law Mike Schneider and Ken Cernock; sister-in-law Jean Casey; and his faithful companion, his cat, Chloe.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, James and Edward Casey; a sister, Noreen Schneider; his in-laws, Anthony "Dink" and Helen Cernock; a sister-in-law, Fran Cernock; and a niece, Janice Cottrell.

Mr. Casey had requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Hospice House or to the Ulster Project in his memory.

The Caseys would like to thank Dr. Santuccio Ricciardi for his professional care and friendship.

Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
