POLAND - A memorial Mass will take place Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church for Barbara A. Sobota, 74, who passed away Friday morning at Masternick Memorial Health Care Center.
Barbara was born Dec. 6, 1938, in Ambridge, Pa., to Edward and Monica Makowka Modic.
She graduated from Indiana PA University, with a Bachelor's degree in Education.
Barbara was a fifth grade teacher for Springfield Local School for over 20 years until retiring in 2000. She was the first individual to be named Teacher of the Year in the Springfield Local School district.
Barbara was a member of the Ladies Reading Club, volunteer set designer for South Range High School and Middle School plays and was an officer, secretary and treasurer for the Swingers Golf League. She organized the first Relay for Life in Springfield Township and chaired the Relay for three years. Barbara was crowned Queen of Relay for Life in 2012.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Anthony E., whom she married in 1962; two sons, Michael Laurel Sobota of Beaver Township and James Shannon Sobota of Ajax, Ontario; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Luke and Max.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Family and friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, and a half and hour before the service Monday at the church.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St,. Canfield, OH 44406 in Barbara's name.
