BOARDMAN - Prayers will begin Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church for Bernard T. Potkanowicz, 76, who lost his four month battle with pancreatic cancer Thursday, dying peacefully surrounded by his family in his home.
Bernard was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Anna Radzik Potkanowicz.
After South High School, Bernard began his working career as a machinist. He later retired from Wean United after almost 30 years.
He was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Church, was very proud of his Polish heritage and enjoyed celebrating traditional Polish Christmas' and smoking kielbasa with his family. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and gardening, woodworking, playing cards and especially cooking for his children and grandchildren. Remembered as a sports optimist, Mr. Potkanowicz was an avid Cleveland Browns and Notre Dame fan.
His wife of 52 years, whom he missed dearly, the former MaryAnn Morris, whom he married Feb. 7, 1959, died June 30, 2011.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Dr. John Baumeier of Liberty and Trish Baquero of Boardman; four sons, Thomas Chris Potkanowicz of Geneva, Ill., Dan Jill Potkanowicz of Poland, William Wendy Potkanowicz of Austintown, and John Potkanowicz of New Middletown; a brother, Joseph Annette Potkanowicz of Poland; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his dog, Odie.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; four sisters, Rose Sakela, Helen Kazy, Sophie Sosnoski and Agnes Belyusar; and two brothers, Thomas Pitkin and Edward Potkanowicz.
