Berlin Center- Funeral Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Higgins-reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Blaine M. Szalaj, age 62, of Berlin Center, died Saturday afternoon as a result of a motorcycle accident.
Blaine was born April 2, 1948 in Youngstown to the late Brownie and Virginia Luc Szalaj. He was a 1966 graduate of Cardnial Mooney High School. Blaine retired in 2009 as a Supervisor from the Ohio Turnpike Commission with over 30 years service.
Blaine was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed Hunting, Fishing, Camping, Spelunking and Skiing. He was an accomplished carpenter and wood worker, he built furniture, unique lanterns, Jewelry boxes as well as tool boxes. Blaine also did the finish carpentry work on his own home. Blaine enjoyed playing music with his accoustic and electric guitars. He loved to take long rides and trips on his motorcycles. Blaine could be found daily walking for miles and miles with his beloved dogs Dakota and Sundance.
Blaine is preceded in death by his parents, and father and mother in-law Guy and Philomena Monaco.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Mary Jean Monaco Szalaj, whom he married June 10, 1972; a sister Ginny O'Mellan and her husband Rick of Boardman, a brother Mike and his wife Angela Szalaj of Boardman, brother-in-law Jim Monaco of Champion; a nephew Ricky Dana O'Mellan of Las Vegas, four nieces, Jennifer O'Mellan of Columbus, Stefanie O'Mellan of Boardman, Mariana Slazaj of Boardman, and Jaryn Monaco of North Dakota; great niece and nephews, Arriane O'Mellan, Sean O'Mellan, and Jacob Poole; and many wonderful friends.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics or to the Animal Rescue Service of your choice.
