Brownie Szalaj, 87

Youngstown- Private funeral services are scheduled for Brownie Szalaj, age 87, of Youngstown, who died Wednesday morning at his residence after a period of declining health.

Brownie was born October 2, 1920 in Conemaugh, PA to the late Michael and Helen Leggins Szalaj.

He retired from Ohio Edison in 1982 with over 30 years of service to the company as a fleet mechanic. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 37th. Infantry Invasion Forces; Brownie recieved Two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his efforts in several invasions in the Pacific Theatre.

Brownie and his wife attended St. Patricks Church.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Szalaj,
who passed away one week ago; and his brother Mack Szalaj.

He leaves his children, a daughter Virginia Richard O'Mellan of Boardman, two sons, Blaine M. Mary Jean Szalaj of Berlin Center, and Michael L. Angela Szalaj of Boardman; four grandchildren, Richard O'Mellan, Jennifer Dill, Stefanie O'Mellan, and Mariana Szalaj; three great grandchildren, Jacob Poole, Sean O'Mellan, and Arriane O'Mellan.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel is in care of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Forum Hospice.
