Carl Kennen

November 29, 1925 — September 20, 2016

AUSTINTOWN - A graveside service was held on Friday at Belmont Park Cemetery for Carl VonKennen, 90, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, surrounded by family and faithful companion Susie.

He was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of Carl and Lavina (Braun) VonKennen.

Carl was a graduate of Chaney High School. As a young man, he moved to California where he resided for nearly 60 years. Carl returned to Youngstown four years ago to be with family, armed with a fur coat in his suitcase.

He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Burbank, Calif. He made his living holding several positions in the interior decorating field,designing and sewing were his passion. Carl was an avid talker and storyteller. He loved to drive across the country visiting family and friends along the way. He loved a good meal, dinner parties, gin and tonic, California sun, long walks with his dogs, cake and visiting neighbors.

Carl is survived by several nieces and nephews; loving friends; and compassionate caregivers, who loved him for his quick wit, infectious laughter and his ability to light up a room.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Vera Tullis; his three brothers, Howard, Joseph and Wilhelm VonKennen; and his partner of 27 years, Robert Williams.

The family would like to extend a very heartfelt appreciation to his caring and compassionate caregivers, Terri, (Dutchess), Jen, Nancy , MJ and MVI Hospice for all their support and guidance.They would also like to thank his California friends and church family, whom he dearly missed, especially the ones who bake, for their continuous calls, cards, thoughts and prayers.
