YOUNGSTOWN - Services will be Saturday at at 9:15 AM at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, and at 10:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church for Carmen M. Mendel age 75 of Youngstown who passed away at her home Monday morning in her sleep after a lengthy illness.
Carmen who was also known as "Dona Carmen" and "Tia" to her family and friends was born July 15, 1929, in San Luis Potosi S.L.P., Mexico.
She was a graduate of Colegio De Las Madres Catholic Prep School in Mexico, and had worked as a commercial artist in Mexico before coming to this country. Carmen was very proud of her work as a nanny in this country, and especially proud of the children she helped care for. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, where she had been one of the founding members of it's "Parents for Christian Education", had served as an usher, and performed in the church's passion plays. She was also a member and Past President of Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana.
"Tia" is survived by her husband Valentin Mendel, whom she married February 16, 1958, a daughter, Elizabeth Patricia Mendel of Washington, D.C., a son Juan Valentin "Johnny" Mendel of Youngstown, and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her mother Raquel Mendoza, and a sister Guadalupe Baez.
Friends may call Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
