YOUNGSTOWN - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Carol Thomas, 93, who passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, surrounded by her family.
Carol was born July 25, 1924, in Indiana, Pa., the daughter of Orlando and Rosemary (Ferguson) Buterbaugh.
She was a graduate of Indiana High School and worked as a switch board operator for the Vindicator for many years until retiring. Carol was a longtime member of the Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was involved in many clubs and organizations, including the district officer of United Methodist Women, Sunday School teacher, and past president of Mother's Club.
She also served as a Brownie Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and was a member of the PTA. Carol was also a member of the Women's Welsh Clubs of America, Austintown Historical Society and Austintown Community Church's Circle. She was recently a member of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church. Carol's family was always the most important part of her life.
Her husband, Griffith V. Thomas, whom she married Sept. 18, 1946, passed away March 20, 2017.
She is survived by two loving daughters, Cynthia (Robert) Sweetapple of Boardman and Bronwyn (Robert) Thomas Ferrier of Stroudsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, Lisa Pedro, Robert Sweetapple II, Carolann Ferrier, and Abigail Ferrier; and a great-granddaughter, Lindsay Pedro.
Carol was also preceded in death by her parents and brother Joseph Wayne.
Family and friends may call Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Mother's Club of Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 1205 Elm St. Youngstown, OH 44505.
