A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at Holy Apostle Parish, SS. Peter and Paul Church to celebrate of life of Catherine (Kate) A. Margetko, 103, who passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Thursday, January 26 at The Assumption Village.
She was born November 23, 1913, in Youngstown a daughter of Jacob and Barbara (Sinkovich) Bernardich.
Catherine spent the first 96 years of her beautiful, full life in the Langsingville area. She attended Adams School and Woodrow Wilson High School. Once she was old enough to work she began working at an area Isaly's.
Following her marriage to Joseph (Red) Margetko in 1936 she joined St. Nicholas Byzantine Church on Wilson Avenue. She was very active in her new church and thoroughly enjoyed her affiliation with the Legion of Mary where she led the Rosary on Sunday. She spent many years visiting the sick of the parish. She also belonged to other Church affiliated organizations.
Catherine was an experienced seamstress, making dresses for her three daughters and herself. She also made drapes, curtains and slipcovers for the family's furniture.
Red passed away in 1977. Shortly before his death he purchased a new car and at the age 65, Catherine learned to drive for the first time.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Gerri (Pat) Ginnetti of Boardman; her sons, Joseph (Nancy) Margetko of Temple TX; Jan Margetko of North Lima and her son-in-law Joseph Tomaskevitch of Youngstown. She also leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Catherine was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Joann and John Glaros; daughter Jeannie Tomaskevitch; her daughter-in-law, Patti Margetko; her grandson, Anthony Ginnetti in addition to her husband and parents, sisters Margaret Chingary, Mary Popovich and brothers, Peter and Stephan Bernardich.
Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, prior to the Mass at Holy Apostle Parish, SS. Peter and Paul Church, Covington Avenue in Youngstown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512 or to SS. Peter and Paul Church.
Professional arrangements are being handled by Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
