Catherine "Kay" Chaszeyka

NEW MIDDLETOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church for Catherine A. “Kay” Chaszeyka, who passed away Thursday evening at her home.

Kay was born in Youngstown, a daughter of the late, Dominic and Gladys (Bruno) Sebastian.

Kay was owner of Suburban Realty, along with her husband, Steve, for 35 years.  She was member of Youngstown Area Board of Realtors, during which she served on the board of directors and was nominated as realtor of the year. While in real estate she was also honored as Woman of the Year by the Youngstown Council of Realtors.

Upon retirement, Kay became a volunteer at Sunrise of Poland and later hired as concierge, where she loved and was loved by the residents. After the death of her husband, Steve, who was the love of her life, she retired from Sunrise, with deep regrets, at the age of 84.

Kay also served as a volunteer at Youngstown University as a member of Score and belonged to the Youngstown Area Group of American Business Women and St. Paul’s Senior Group. In her later years, her passion was spending time with her good friends at Groggy’s Mondays Coffee Shop. Her favorite joy was her family, who always enjoyed her cooking. Despite her failing health she always maintained her sparkling sense of humor. She will be missed by all.

Her husband of 63 years, Steve Chaszeyka, whom she married Oct. 4, 1946, passed away Jan. 4, 2010.

Kay leaves a daughter, Nancy Popovich of Poland; three sons, Steve (Carol) of New Middletown, Vince (Cyndy) of New Middletown, John (Sheri) of Youngstown; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Kay was also preceded in death by a sister, Laura Grohovsky and a brother, Anthony Sebastian.

Family and friends may call Wednesday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
