ELICOTT CITY, MD. - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church, celebrated by the Rev. Gerald DeLucia, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel for Mrs. Cecelia Somers who peacefully passed away of natural causes, with her family by her side in Elicott City. She was 99 years old.
Cecelia was born on Feb. 19, 1917, in Youngstown, to Mary (Marino) and Steven Guerriero.
She graduated from South High School in 1935. During World War II, Cecelia worked as a "Rosie the Riveter," fabricating aircraft parts for the General Fireproofing Company in Youngstown. She also held positions at the General Electric Company and the Boardman School System.
Cecelia was a founding member of St. Luke Roman Catholic Church and attended Mass with family at Robinwood Lane School before it was permanently located to South Avenue. She had many hobbies and knitted and crocheted countless hats and afghans for family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and canning fruits and vegetables from the bountiful garden tended with her husband. Cecelia also loved cooking and baking and entertaining her large circle of family and friends.
She married Herbert Somers on Sept. 19, 1957.
Cecelia leaves to cherish all their wonderful memories, her children, Mary Somers Hernandez (Richard) and Herbert Anthony Somers (Nancy); her sister, Rita Alberti; five grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her siblings, Rose Marinelli, Angelo, Joseph, Vincent, Stephen (Catherine Guerriero), Mary Francis Delpha, and Carmel LaCivita.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery, following the Mass.
