AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, for Charles S. Matkoskey, 90, who died peacefully Thursday morning at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.
Charles was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Wehrum, Pa., the son of Nick and Nellie (Homach) Matkoskey.
As a veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corp and U.S. Army, Charles served his country during World War II and the Korean War. When he returned from war, Charles worked as a press operator and die checker for Youngstown Steel Door for 33 years, until retiring in 1989. Charles was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He was also a former member of Austintown Farm Bureau and supported local 4-H. In 1996, his family won Canfield Fair's "Family of the Year."
Charles loved collecting odds and ends. He was both handy and creative and would often construct small knick knacks, which he loved to gift to others. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed tractors and traveling, and never met a stranger. He also enjoyed spending time with Joyce's dog, Casey.
Charles is survived by his wife, the former Sarah Shaulis, whom he married Sept. 11, 1955, and spent 61 wonderful years married; three daughters, Joyce (Tom) Wailes of Cedarville, Mary Lou (Dave) Moser of Troy, and Diane (Dave) James of Lancaster; twin brother John Matkoskey of Acosta, Pa.; and six grandchildren, Jim, Tom and Christine Moser, and Sara, Andrew and Emily James; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George, Nick and Harry Matkoskey; and infant sister Anna Matkoskey.
Family and friends may call on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511 or to the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Fund.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Heritage Manor and their close friends and neighbors for their excellent care and compassion given to Charles during his stay.
