Charles Spagnola, Jr

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1125 Turin St, Youngstown, officiated by the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio, for Mr. Charles "Boots" Spagnola Jr., 88, who passed away Wednesday July 13, 2016, following a six-month fight to rehabilitate from a broken hip fall.

Mr. Spagnola was born on Sept. 26, 1927, in Youngstown, son of Elaine (Stevens) and Charles Spagnola Sr. Charles lived in Youngstown for most of his life.

At 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and traveled the world for three years on the U.S.S. Larson. Upon returning to Youngstown, he met his wife Anita (Mele), and after a short courtship, they were married. They celebrated their 66th anniversary earlier this year.

He worked at Swedlow Plastics as a factory worker for a short time, and then took a position with the U.S. Steel Corporation, where he worked as a millwright and retired after 25 years.

In retirement, Charles and Anita moved to Greensboro, N.C., to be near their son and grandchildren.

Charles was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Youngstown, and St. Paul the Apostle in Greensboro.

Charles leaves behind to cherish all their wonderful memories his loving wife, Anita; his son, David and daughter-in-law Linda; two grandchildren, Lara and Joe (Kathy); a niece, Carol Dodd; and two grandnieces in South Carolina, Jennifer and Erin. In Ohio, Charles is survived by his aunt, Anne Stevens; a special nephew, Sam Costello (Stevie); and many other wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Charles Sr. and Elaine, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marie Dodd.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday morning, from 10 to 10:50 a.m., at the church.

Entombment will take place following the Mass at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
