CANFIELD — Sister Charlotte Italiano, OSU (formerly known as Sister Clare Marie) died Monday, Jan, 29, 2024, at Windsor House in Canfield, from complications after a fall. She was 91.
Charlotte Italiano was born April 2, 1932, the daughter of Pasquale and Clara Calo Italiano.
She attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1950. She earned a B.S. in education in 1954 from Youngstown College (now Youngstown State University).
Sister Charlotte entered the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown on Sept. 11, 1955, and professed final vows on Aug. 12, 1961.
She earned a M.A. in education from St. John College, Cleveland, in 1967. She also did post-graduate work at Walsh University, the University of Dayton and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
She belonged to and was active in numerous professional organizations, including the National Catholic Education Association, the International Reading Association, the National Association of Elementary Principals, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Eastern Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Phi Delta Kappa and the Conference for Religious for the Diocese of Youngstown.
In her 63 years of active ministry, Sister Charlotte taught at St. Rose, Girard; St. John, Campbell; Immaculate Conception and Holy Name, Youngstown; and Holy Family, Poland. She served as principal at Holy Name, St. Patrick and Immaculate Conception, Youngstown, as well as 27 years at Holy Family, Poland. She was also the principal and director of Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten. When she retired from Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten, she worked as a consultant for St. Joseph the Provider School in Youngstown.
Sister Charlotte served on the leadership team of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown for three terms, as well as the local superior in various convents.
She was honored by several local organizations. She was named YWCA Board of Trustees Woman of the Year in 1982, YSU’s Beeghly College of Education Lifetime Educational Service Award in 2005 and awarded the Golden Apple Award from the Diocese of Youngstown in 2012 as honored principal.
With her identical twin sister, Rose Pacalo, Sister Charlotte participated annually in Twins Day activities in Twinsburg. The two were crowned queens of the festival in 2013.
Sister Charlotte leaves her sisters in community; her twin, Rose (Captain Nicholas) Pacalo; and a brother, John Italiano; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by sisters, Florence Kloos and Frances Italiano.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland. Friends may call 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road, Canfield; and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, 2726 Center Road, Poland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
