NEW MIDDLETOWN - Memorial services will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Clarence "Dave" Hamilton, 96, who died Tuesday morning at the Masternick Memorial Home in New Middletown.
Dave was born Oct. 25, 1915, in Chambersburg, Pa., the son of LeRoy and Mary Waddell Hamilton.
He had worked as a self employed contractor, owning and operating the C.D. Hamilton Contracting Co. before retiring.
Dave came from a family with a long military lineage. His great-great-grandfather, Robert Hamilton served under General George Washington and General Anthony Wayne during the Revolutionary War. His great-grandfather served with the Ohio Militia in the War of 1812. His grandfather, Frank Hamilton served with the Union Army during the Civil War. His maternal grandfather, James Waddell also served during the Civil War, but with the Confederate Army of Virginia as part of Col. John Mosby's Rangers. His father, LeRoy served in the Spanish-American War, and Dave was proud to serve in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Dave was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 3307 and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
At the age of 18, Dave moved from Keyser, W.Va. to Hubbard and married the former Gertrude Schwartz. They had two children, David and Linda. In 1945, he moved his family to the Bryan Mawr Plot on the east side of Youngstown.
Dave loved the Lord and enjoyed old time hymns.
His wife, Gertrude preceded him in death in 1977. He later married the former Ruth Donnelly and she preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Hamilton moved to New Middletown in 2000.
Dave is survived by his devoted companion, Harriet Vaparides, who was always at his side; a son, David A. Jeanie Hamilton of Columbiana; a daughter, Linda Hamilton Sarver of Austintown; a sister, Mary Amtower of Keyser; his stepchildren, Pattie Craig Koenig, Kathie Kopkash, Ruth Bucurel and Joe Kathy Donnelly; 13 grandchildren, Jill Jones, Jodi Ziadeh, Chris Thomas, Carol Reiter, Kim Obbards, T.J. Kopkash, Bridget Koenig, Jessica Koenig, Ryan Bucurel, Nick Bucurel, Craig Bucurel, Brandon Donnelly and Ryan Donnelly; and four great-grandchildren.
Dave was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the donors favorite charity in Dave's memory.
