AUSTINTOWN - Services will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Clyde W. Mummert, 90, who died Tuesday evening at Altera Clairbridge of Austintown.
Clyde was born June 18, 1921, in Alliance, the son of Lloyd L. and Effie B. Baughman Mummert. He moved to Austintown in 1966.
Mr. Mummert served in the Army Infantry during World War II. He later worked as a payroll accountant at the former Republic Steel, retiring after 37 years from LTV Steel in 1983.
Clyde was a longtime active member of the Austintown Community Church, where he was a member of its men's fellowship, served many years as the head usher at the 8 a.m. Sunday worship service, and became the overseer of the "Need Room" Austintown Community Church's food ministry for the needy. Clyde also prepared and served meals at St. John's Soup Kitchen, which later became known as the "Red Door Cafe." In addition to his church volunteer work, Clyde also offered free tax assistance to senior citizens as a tax counselor with T.C.E.
Mr. Mummert also enjoyed playing softball and was a member of several teams in Alliance. He was also a former member of the American Legion and the Masonic Temple F.&A.M. No. 271 in Alliance.
His wife, the former Jean Robbins, whom he married Nov. 6, 1948, died April 18, 1986.
He is survived by two daughters, Kary Guy Shively of Austintown and Susan John Burkholder of Oregon; two brothers, Lloyd Mummert of Texas and Gerald Mummert of Ohio; four grandchildren, Brian, Mallory, Terin and Loree; and four great-grandchildren, Derrek, Brody, Brianna and Sarah.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sterling; and his good friend, Elizabeth Kettunen.
The Mummert family would like to thank Clarbridge and Southern Care Hospice for their dignified, respectful and excellent care for Clyde during his stay.
