Dana D. Childers

YOUNGSTOWN - Dana D. Childers, a dedicated police officer and family man, passed away on August 22, 2024 in Youngstown, Ohio. Born on September 1, 1942, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Dana lived a life marked by commitment to his community, passion for the outdoors, and a deep love for his family.

Dana began crafting his discipline in the Army where he served as a military policeman. His distinguished career began with the Youngstown Police Department, where he devoted 30 years of his life. Starting in 1969, he swiftly made his mark in the field, earning a promotion to Sergeant in 1977. He was later appointed as head of the Strike Force in 1982 and became the commanding officer of the VICE Squad in 1984. His dedication and service culminated in a fulfilling retirement in 1989, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and exemplary leadership.

Dana's outgoing nature and willingness to dedicate time to both his career and community involvement truly defined his character. He was known for being involved in various groups and seamlessly integrating compassion and camaraderie into all aspects of his life. Outside of his professional pursuits, Dana was an avid fisherman and hunter. He found joy in working on cars and had a special bond with his dog, Chloe. His love for the outdoors was deepened through his active participation in the Mahoning Sportsman Club, where he explored and appreciated nature.

Dana is survived by his loving daughters, Diane Childers of Girard, Ohio, and Cherry (William) Cappabianca of Salem, Ohio; his son, Dewayne Childers of Salem, Ohio; and his grandchildren, Sara, Cheyenne, Dakota, Dean, Jack, Angelina, Zachary, Gavin, Alyssa, and R.J. He also leaves behind one niece, Connie Ben, and two nephews, Larry Childers and Eric Childers, who were always by his side in his times of need.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Childers, Freida Childers (Yoke); brother, Larry Childers; and his son, Rodney Cordell.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home - Austintown Chapel, located at 4303 Mahoning Ave, Youngstown, Ohio, on September 4, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. A private funeral service will immediately follow at the same location for family members only, commencing at 5:30 PM.
