YOUNGSTOWN - Services will be Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church for Daniel Flood age 55 of Youngstown who passed away Monday from complications from melanoma at University Hospital in Cleveland after a one year illness.
Dan was born September 27, 1949 in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Bonita Casey Flood.
Dan graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1967, and later received his BA and Masters Degrees from YSU. Mr. Flood continued his education by completing studies beyond his Masters degree, and in 2002 earned his National Certification for teaching in Social Studies.
His teaching and coaching career that spanned over 30 years began at St. Patrick School in Youngstown in 1970, in 1973 he began teaching for the Poland Schools, teaching social studies at both the middle and high school levels. He also served the Poland Schools as a coach, coaching varsity baseball in the 70's and 80's, 7th and 8th grade basketball coach, and 7th and 8th grade head track coach. In 1990 he was the varsity soccer coach, and had served as the director of the winter intramural program for over 20 years.
Mr. Flood was a member of St. Nicholas Church, the National Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and Poland Education Association where he served as treasurer for 12 years, the Ohio Council on Social Studies, and for over 25 years has been a member of the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association.
Dan had been recognized by numerous awards over his career for his dedication to teaching. In 2002 he was named the Poland Education Association Educator of the Year, in 2003 he was recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his work in Patriot's Pen, in 2004 he was presented the Dr. Port Award by the Poland Sports Boosters, and was named the Poland Foundations 2004 Teacher of the Year. Most recently in 2005, the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association named its MVP award for its annual All Star Basketball tournament the "Dan Flood MVP Award" to honor Dan for his long time service and dedication.
Dan is survived by his bride of 35 years the former Winnie Pugh, whom he married October 17, 1970, three daughters, Jennifer and her husband Jason Gasser of Cincinnati, Mary Flood and her boy friend Ty Dorney, and Anne Flood at home, five sons, Daniel his and wife Lisa Flood of Madina, Mike and his wife Melissa Flood of Youngstown, Ken Flood of Youngstown, Brian and his wife Michelle Flood of Pittsburgh, and Joe Flood at home, a sister Judy and her husband Richard Mazur of North Carolina, two brothers, Joe and his wife Diane Flood of Maryland, and Gerald and his wife Sandy Flood of Florida, six beautiful grandchildren, Mikey, Malysea, Kayleigh, and Danny Flood, and Emma and Andrew Gasser, and his mother-in-law Bernice Pugh of Youngstown.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 2 PM to 8 PM Thursday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Daniel M. Flood Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Farmers National Bank 106 W. McKinley Way, Poland Ohio 44514.
