POLAND - Prayers will begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, for Daniel Charles Mootz, 86, who died Monday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Daniel was born June 24, 1927, in Campbell, to John and Helen (Piejko) Mootz.

He was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and Salem Community College. Dan worked as a Draftsman and Mechanical Engineer for Republic Steel and LTV Steel for 36 years, until retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for eight years.

Dan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 7th Infantry Division, and served his county during the Korean War while earning the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 1950. Following his military service and several leg operations, Dan married his wife Susan in 1951 (on crutches!), whom he met at the offices of Republic Steel Corporation. They were married for 60 years

He was a member of Holy Family Parish, the Knights of Columbus, National Association of Letter Carriers, and was a Little League Baseball manager for his son's baseball teams. Dan enjoyed gardening, repairing televisions and radios, doing general home improvement projects, and spending time with his children and, later on, his grandchildren.

Over the years, Dan enjoyed traveling to Connecticut, enabling him to also attend many New York Yankees' baseball games in the Bronx, his lifelong favorite team. He also traveled with his wife to California several times to visit grandchildren and was treated to a very special day of seeing the Yankees play the San Francisco Giants on his 80th birthday.

His wife, the former Susan J. Didek, whom he married Aug. 23, 1951, died June 21, 2012.

Daniel is survived by his children, Danis Sue Mootz of Boardman and Daniel (Donna) Mootz of Mountain View, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Kaylin and Alayna Nadia, both of Mountain View, Calif..

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Tanya Mootz; and three brothers, Walter, Max and Joseph Mootz.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at St. Elizabeth for their wonderful care and compassion given to Dan in his final hours.

Family and friends may call Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

The rendering of Military Funeral Honors will take place at Lake Park Cemetery in Boardman.
