AUSTINTOWN - A prayer service will held Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Christine Church for
Don Guthrie who passed away the evening of January 25, surrounded by his beloved family and faithful dog, Keena.
Don was born May 14, 1943 in Youngstown, son of Lillian Buschagen and Clyde Guthrie.
He was a 1961 graduate of Mohawk High School in Bessemer, Pennsylvania. In 1962, he graduated from the National Academy of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C. and began his career in broadcasting as a disc jockey at WEER-AM in Warrenton, West Virginia. From 1965-1970 he worked at WKWK and WNEU in Wheeling, West Virginia. In July of 1970, Don began his 44 year career in radio and television at WKBN. Over the course of those years, he was employed as a DJ, radio program director, and television weatherman. It was then that he discovered his fascination and love of weather forecasting, which prompted him to enroll at Mississippi State. He earned a degree in broadcast meteorology in 1994 and held seals of approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. He is most well known in the area as the chief meteorologist at WKBN TV.
Don leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 41 years, Debbie (Sherock) his daughters, Amanda (Russell)Frederick, Kristy Guthrie, his son David Guthrie and granddaughter Addison Frederick; his aunt Virginia (Oscar) Haspel; several cousins; and countless friends, loved ones, and loyal viewers.
