AUSTINTOWN - Donald E. Curry Jr., 71, passed away on Jan. 2, 2018, at Briarfield Manor in Austintown.
Mr. Curry was born to Donald E. Curry Sr. and Jeanette A. Dolfe Curry on Dec. 22, 1946, in Youngstown, and resided in Austintown for most of his life
He was a 1965 graduate of Austintown Fitch and was Class Valedictorian. He attended John Carroll University in Cleveland on a R.O.T.C. scholarship and upon graduation was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division after completing jump school with the 82nd Airborne. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and 2 Bronze Stars. He would carry physical and psychological injuries from this war the rest of his life.
After the Army, he returned to this area and began a career in business. He retired on disability from the former Ohio Bureau of Employment Services where he was a Labor Market Analyst. Along the way he indulged in his love of education and earned a MBA, had accrued hours towards a degree in economics, earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and had planned to go to law school until illness forced a change in plans. Don had served on several boards in the community and always stressed the importance of education as an important tool in solving our community's problems.
He is survived by his brother, Joseph Curry of Austintown; his sister and husband, Mary Beth and Bob Macabobby of Canfield; and his nephew and wife, Tom and Danielle Macabobby of Canfield. He also leaves a great-niece and two great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.
Don's family would like to thank the staff at Briarfield Manor who extended kindness, friendship and caring to him the last few years of his life and to Hospice of the Valley for their compassion and care during his last few weeks.
The family is asking anyone who wishes to make monetary remembrances to donate to agencies that support veterans.
There are no calling hours. Interment will be at a later date at the Western Reserve Military Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
