Donald Thomas DeCarlo, 86, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away Friday evening at Hospice House.
Donald was born in Youngstown on April 17, 1938. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School at Oak Hill and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1956. Donald earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from St. Gregory’s Seminary and a Master’s Degree in Theology from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, academic institutions in Cincinnati, known as the Athenaeum of Ohio.
Donald was ordained as a priest in 1964 serving at St. Aloysius in East Liverpool, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Austintown, and St. Edward in Youngstown.
Donald left active ministry in 1971. He began a new career as a state probation officer, a role in which he proudly served until his retirement in 2000.
He was an active member of Holy Family Parish in Poland, Ohio where he taught junior high religious education for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at Community Kitchen.
Donald will forever remain in the hearts of his surviving family: his beloved wife, Dr. Catherine Molloy DeCarlo, whom he married on March 7, 1980; his two sons, Jonathan David (Chelsea Cook) DeCarlo of Gaithersburg, MD and Andrew DeCarlo of Columbus, Ohio; his cherished grandchildren Owen and Aislinn DeCarlo; as well as his brother, James (Bonnie) DeCarlo of Sebring.
Donald is now reunited with his parents John Louis and Helen(Hosa) DeCarlo who have gone before him.
Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM at Higgins-Reardon, Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
Prayers will be held Thursday at 9:30 AM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial
Burial will take place at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society at Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland Ohio 44514.
