BOARDMAN - Prayers will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Church for Donald "Buster" D. McCloud, 83, who passed away Wednesday morning at Hospice House.
He was born June 28, 1927, in Youngstown, the son of Daniel B. and Rosella McNally McCloud.
Buster graduated from Girard High School and Youngstown State University, where he played football and track. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Japan in the Occupation troops. From 1950 to 1954, he was a Youngstown College ROTC Captain and in 1954 was commissioned as Second Lt. He worked in sales for 30 years for Specialty Pipe and Tube.
He was a well respected scholastic grid official and had received his 30 year varsity football award from the O.H.S.A.A. and officiated in the local City Series, the Steel Valley Conference, Trumbull "AA," Tri-County and Inter-County League's. Buster was nominated by his peers to officiate the state grid play-offs on eight separate occasions, working the state championship game three times.
His coaching experience includes Ursuline High School 1954 to 1956 varsity football, basketball and track and field, St. Dominic School 1966 to 1982 as the Head Football coach for the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, coaching his sons and nephews, North Catholic Jr. High Football 2000 to 2001 and a volunteer freshman coach at Cardinal Mooney High School 2002 to 2007.
He was a member of the church for over 50 years, a charter member of the Gaelic Society, YSU Football Alumni Organization and in 2006, was recognized by the YSU Penguin Club's "Penguin of the Year" as one of the core founders of the football alumni association. He was a 2001 legend honoree for "Difference Makers" for his work with area youth, community service and his continuous commitment to strong family values and in 2008, he was the only special award recipient from the Curbstone Coaches.
He was an avid golfer in the Mill Creek Seniors Golf League and was a member of the MVR Tuesday Night Super Club.
He leaves his wife, the former Claranne Lyden, whom he married Nov. 25, 1954; his children, Don McCloud Jr. and his children, Dan and Caley, Tom and Denise and their children, Mara and Brady, Patty and Bud Joyce and their children, Ryan and Katie, Megann and Michael Basile and children Lindsay and Kyle Basile and Daniel and Taylor Martin, Marty and his daughter, Rylee and Brendan and Kristin and their daughter, Carly; two sisters, Sarah Drevet and Marguerite Bluedorn; a brother, Cecil Eileen Richards; a sister-in-law, Joan Gary Oles; a brother-in-law, Edward Donnelly; 29 nieces and nephews; 66 great-nieces and nephews; eight great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as a host of many close relatives and close friends.
Buster was preceded in death by his parents and stepmom, Victoria; a sister, Mary Pat Donnelly; and a brother, Michael Richards.
Friends may call Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
