BOARDMAN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church for Dorothy Jean "Baba" Getch, 65, who passed away Friday morning at her home surrounded by her family after an on-going battle with cancer.
Dorothy was born July 27, 1948, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Anna R. (Stanovcak) Desmond Sr.
Dorothy was a 1966 graduate of Austintown Fitch and a 1989 graduate of Youngstown State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
She was a Registered Nurse (RN) at St. Elizabeth Health Center/Akron Children's Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Dorothy was a vivacious, loving, caring person who would give and provide anything her family needed. After raising her two sons, she earned her college degree. She cared for patients but then found her calling taking care of premature babies. While working as a nurse, Dorothy was awarded the Cameos of Caring award from Akron Children's Hospital.
Dorothy was a devout catholic and was a member of St. Charles for 34 years. She enjoyed her summer vacations in Long Boat Key, Fla. with her sisters and family. She always looked forward to her monthly 500 Club with "The Girls." She loved her flowers and vegetable garden, when the deer weren't eating it. She also loved cooking, the outdoors, discount bargain shopping, making people happy and caring for others. Her greatest love was for her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren.
Dorothy leaves her husband of 47 years, Peter P. Getch, whom she married July 15, 1967, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church; her two sons Steven (Laura) Getch of Cuyahoga Falls and Richard (Jolene) Getch of Rochester, Pa.; her grandchildren, Finley Getch, Abigail Getch, and Griffin Getch; her four sisters, Ruth Ann (Robert) Sutton, Barbara Sue (Butch) Akins, Mary Jo (James) Libert, and Theresa Lynn Lyden, all of Austintown; numerous nieces and nephews; and her loving, compassionate and caring NICU co-workers.
Dorothy was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas J. Desmond Jr.
Family and friends may pay their respects Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church.
Dorothy's family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of the Valley for all of the care they gave Dorothy at the end of her journey.
