CANFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Canfield for Dorothy A. LaGuardia, 90, who passed away Monday at the Inn at Ironwood.
Dorothy was born March 3, 1926, in Girard, the third child of Walter and Mary (Lastyk) Sagan.
Dorothy graduated from Girard High School in 1944. She worked at the Lordstown Ordnance Depot from 1944 to 1948. She then worked at the Army-Air Force Recruitment Office until 1950. She was a member of St. Michael's Church.
On June 25, 1949, Dorothy married Joseph R. LaGuardia. They shared 53 years together and had four children, Joseph J. (Karen) of Erie, Pa., John of Boardman, Catherine (Charles) Wirtz of Canfield, and Lisa (Robert) Macinga of North Lima.
Dorothy was a wonderful mother and cook, creating fond memories for her family with her wonderful meals, combining the traditions of her Ukrainian heritage with that of "Joe's" Italian heritage. No matter how many times she made something, it always came out the same - perfect! She enjoyed sharing her recipes and cookie tips with her family, and was proud when they mastered some of her recipes. Family meant everything to her.
Dorothy also loved reading books about history, politics and biographies. She was blessed with a keen mind even at 90 years of age and could recount in great detail the contents of the many books she read.
Most of all, Dorothy was especially proud of her nine grandchildren, Jill, Jennifer, Carla, John, Chuck, Victoria, Mary, Daniel and Michelle; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexis, Stephen, Julia, Emily, Grace, Anthony, Caleb and Finley, with the ninth, Hadley, due to be born next month. Dorothy and Joe were very much involved in their grandchildren's lives, and enjoyed seeing their family tree grow with the addition of great-grandchildren.
Dorothy also leaves a sister, Catherine Sagan of Hawaii; and a brother, Walter Sagan of South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Elizabeth Hentosh; and two brothers, Joseph and Nicholas Sagan.
Dorothy's family would like to thank the staff and residents of the Inn at Ironwood for welcoming Dorothy and making her last few months there so enjoyable.
Family and friends may call Saturday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at St. Michael's Church.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
