Dorothy Martin

August 28, 1936 — March 22, 2010

POLAND - Prayers will begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at noon at the Holy Family Church for Dorothy Martin, 73, who passed away Monday afternoon at Hospice House.

Dorothy was born Aug. 28, 1936, in Phoenixville, Pa., the daughter of Peter and Anna Hriko Chapay.

She was a graduate of Phoenixville High School and later graduated from the Columbia Institute in Philadelphia. After her graduation, she worked as the secretary to the personnel manager of the Borrows Company which at the time was working on the Atlas Rocket Project. She was a member of St. Christine Church and volunteered at the gift shop at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Dorothy will always be remembered for her complete devotion to her family. There are no words to adequately describe her genuine sweetness and loving presence. She always brought a sense of fun to any occasion and had a zest and love for life that was to be admired. Her greatest legacy is her strong commitment to family and the Christian values that she both taught through her words and actions. She had a loving impact on all who were blessed enough to know her.

She is survived by her husband, James Martin, whom she married Sept. 22, 1958; two daughters, Kim and her husband, Howard Vari of Poland and Heidi Martin of Boardman; her grandchildren, Rachel and Alex Vari and Dillon and James Gennaro, both of Flat Rock Care Center in Flat Rock; her mother-in-law, Susan Martin and sister-in-law, Joyce Peters, both of Edmond, Okla.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Lynn Martin; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Leo Zeleski.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.
