HURON - Dorothy Virginia Carter Pfau, 92, passed away on Oct. 28, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Clare Ray Carter.
Dorothy graduated from the Ellis School in Pittsburgh in 1939, and from Wheelock College in Boston in 1943. After earning her B.A., she taught kindergarten in Aspenwall, Pa., before her marriage in August of 1944 to her childhood sweetheart, the late Attorney William E. Pfau Jr., whom she loved and cared for until his death in June of 2005. The couple was married at the Carters' farm in Wilmington, Pa.
A dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, Dorothy participated in church events and taught Sunday school. Also an avid reader and gardener, she grew delicate tea roses and was a member of Glen Gardeners, Coterie and the North Hill Study Club. As an active member of the Junior League of Youngstown, she did extensive volunteer work in addition to serving a term as Secretary.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dorothy's life revolved around her family.
She leaves her sons, William Margaret Pfau III of Canfield and John Diane Pfau of Boardman; her daughters, Judith Cochran of Granville, Jane Eric Godshalk of Haverford, Pa., and Dorothy Pfau of Canfield; her grandchildren, David Cochran of Columbus, Adam Erlbaum of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Sarah Thomas Guilbride of New York, Wendy Pfau of Hollywood, Calif., Katherine Pfau of Canfield, Brian Melanie Pfau of Canfield, William Pfau of Columbus, Kelly Pfau of New Albany, Michael Pfau of Canfield, Eric Godshalk of San Jose, Calif. and Dr. Elisabeth Glenn Richard of Silver Springs, Md.; and great-grandchildren Madeline and Alexander Richard of Silver Springs and Caroline Pfau of Canfield.
The second of four siblings, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Carter of Shrewsbury, Ma. and leaves her sisters, Nancy Carter McKay of Mystic, Conn. and Jane Presley McCance of Williamsburg, Va.
A memorial service for family members will be held in Huron, where the Pfaus spent their retirement years.
