AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Christine Parish for Dr. Amil Carl Hernandez PhD., 76, who passed away surrounded by his family Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018, at University Hospitals in Cleveland. From his birth on Oct. 18, 1941, to his death, he encouraged those around him with wisdom, humor, and a true faith in God.
Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, son of Palmira and Domingo Guzman, he was the second of four children.
He married his devoted wife, Sheila (Alexander) Hernandez, on Nov. 19, 1972. Together they had two loving sons and two daughters-in-law, Justin Amil and his wife, Megan (Spencer) Hernandez and Jeremy Amil and his wife, Sherry (Campana) Hernandez. Amil often stated that he considered both of his sons’ wives to be his daughters.
Amil was proud to have earned his Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Kent State University and his PhD in Counseling/ Psychology from Columbia Pacific University through Kent State. Amil served as the Supervisor and Clinical Director of Eastern Behavioral Health and Clinical Director of Southbridge Counseling. He remained active in his field until the time of his illness at Churchill Counseling Services in Canfield.
Besides his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law, he is survived by his siblings, Myrtelina (Hernandez) Rosaly, Karla (Hernandez) Devereux, and Luis Hernandez; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and the star of his eye, “his prince,” his grandson, Logan Elias Hernandez.
A true servant of God, Amil was a faithful member of St. Christine Parish in Youngstown. Amil also loved writing poetry, creating art with his many paintings and drawings, and watching old movies. His favorite actor was James Dean, of whom he collected an assortment of memorabilia.
All family and friends that Amil touched are invited to visit his family at church services on Wednesday and calling hours Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, 3701 Starr’s Center, in Canfield.
