MELBOURNE, FLA. - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m., at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, officiated by the Rev. Msgr. Ken Miller, preceded by a 10:30 a.m. prayer service at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Dr. Guido E. Schiavone, 102, who passed away peacefully Friday evening at Platinum Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Melbourne.
Dr. Schiavone was born on March 15, 1914, in Montaguto, Italy, son of Carmen and Anna Marie (Valerio) Schiavone. He and his family later settled in Austintown, where he was a longtime resident.
He attended The Ohio State University, then Emory University, where he obtained his doctoral degree in Dentistry. Following graduation, Guido selflessly enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an officer in England during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he opened a dental practice in Austintown, before retiring after 40 years of service to Mahoning County.
Guido enjoyed his retirement by relocating to Vista, Calif., before moving to Gainesville, Fla. and Rockledge, Fla. to be closer to his children.
He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where he donated the altar, past president of the American Legion Post 301, where he had the privilege of placing flowers at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Guido was very proud of his Italian heritage. He was involved in the Elks Club, Italian Club, and Alpha Phi Delta fraternity. Most importantly, he was known for his kind heart, and willingness to help others. He did so by volunteering most of his time to those who needed dental work.
Guido was well loved and will be missed by all, especially his three daughters, Karen E. Schiavone of Rockledge, Ann S. (Robert) Crawford of Waldo, Fla. and Denise (JR) Russo of Cocco Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Heather Miller, Shawn Vesco and Chad and Robby Crawford; great-grandsons Caden, Mason, and Regan Crarwford; sister Yole Conte; brother Emil Schiavone; sisters-in-law Vera Schiavone and Phyllis Schiavone; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday morning from 9 to 10:25 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will take place following the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, with military honors being provided by the American Legion Post 301.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
