YOUNGSTOWN ? Dr. James Kenneth Davidson died at his home on Thursday after a long courageous battle with prostate cancer. He and his family celebrated his 89th birthday on Tuesday.
Dr. Davidson was born May 4, 1921, in Chicago, the son of John H. and Ruth Johnson Davidson. His family moved to Youngstown in the 1930s and he graduated from Austintown Fitch High School.
Dr. Davidson completed his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University and received a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1946 from the College of Dentistry at Ohio State.
During college, he served in the Army Special Training Corps. He and his wife of 47 years, Gail Baird Davidson met in Washington, D.C. while they both served in the U.S. Navy. He operated a private dental practice on Youngstown?s west side from 1948 to 1988.
Dr. Davidson was a member of the Psi Omega Fraternity, the Corydon Palmer Dental Society, the Ohio State Alumni Association, the Ohio and American Dental Associations and the Nixon Dental Study Club. He was a member of the Mahoning United Methodist Church. An avid fisherman and golfer, ?Doc? was a member of the Senior Skins Gang at Mill Creek Metro Parks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1994 and his brother, Attorney John H. Davidson, who passed away last year.
He leaves another brother, Dr. Edward Davidson of Mansfield; three daughters, Suzanne Smart Ronald of Morgantown, W.Va., Collette of Columbus and Christine of Youngstown; grandsons, Josh Smart Melanie of Coatesville, Pa., Christopher Smart Gillian of Morgantown, Henry Thompson of New York City and Charlie Thompson of Columbus; his granddaughter, Mia Thompson of Youngstown; two great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
Funeral services will be at noon on Monday at the Mahoning United Methodist Church with Pastor Joyce Lawson officiating.
Committal prayers will be offered at 2:30 p.m. with military honors at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
