POLAND - Prayers will begin Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for Dr. John M. Deagan, DDS, 74, who died Friday afternoon at the Hospice House.

John was born June 14, 1936, in Salem, the son of Edwin and Mary Gallagher Deagan.

He was a Salem High School graduate and later graduated from John Carroll University and Georgetown University Dental School. He was a member of the Holy Family Church and had served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Poland Knights of Columbus, the Lake Milton Boat Club, the Cordyn-Palmer Dental Society and was past president of the Wesso Nixon Study club.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Deagan also was a dental instructor at Choffin Career Center.

His wife, the former Virginia Potter, whom he married July 8, 1961, died April 13, 1991.

He is survived by eight daughters, Mary Ellen Thomas Granchie of Struthers, Kathy Scott Bachik of Cranberry Township, Pa., Maureen Tony Hirth of Lapeer, Mich., Beth David DeLauter of Marysville, Karen Zakhnini of Baltimore, Erin Will Parker of Austintown, Shannon Mario Pecchia of Struthers and Tara Deagan of Boardman; four sons, John Sharon Deagan, Patrick Kathleen Deagan of Copley; Robert Deagan of Youngstown and Daniel Erika Deagan of Rocky River; a brother, Joseph Leila Deagan of Minerva; 25 grandchildren; and his dog, Prissy.

In addition, Dr. Deagan is survived by his fiancee, Barbara Opritza of Struthers, and her children, Vicki Balogh, Cynthia Dennis Golubic, James Lynn Oprtiza, William Diane Opritza and Jennifer Matt Martin.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to either Hospice of the Valley, Cystic Fibrosis, or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
