POLAND - Prayers will begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Holy Family Church at 10 a.m. for Edward Nappy, 95, who died peacefully Wednesday evening at Windsor House, with his daughter by his side.
Edward was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Torre Orsaia, Italy, the son of Nicola and Marie (Volpintesta) Naponiella.
He graduated high school in Italy and from the Culinary Institute in New York City. Edward became a United States citizen on May 6, 1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. His first job out of college was at the Waldorf Astoria as a sous chef in New York City. He later landed his first chef position in White Plains, N.Y. under Mr. Mete, who would eventually become a lifelong friend. After moving to the Youngstown area, he and his wife owned the Castle Restaurant for nearly 50 years until retiring in the early 1990s.
At the restaurant, Edward truly felt as if he was "King of the Castle." He prided his restaurant for offering hearty food, at low prices, and was kind and friendly to all his customers.
Edward was a member of Christ Our Savior Knights of Columbus Struthers Council 4471, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight, a member of the Holy Family Church, where he served as an usher for over 45 years, the Senior Citizen Club, and a former member of the Restaurant Owners Association.
His wife, the former Nancy DeGise, whom he married Aug. 10, 1946, died Aug. 12, 2012.
Edward is survived by his daughter, Judith Ann Nappy of Poland and his granddog, Lilly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Volpen, who raised him.
Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Knights of Columbus will recite the Rosary at 4:45 p.m.
Judith would like to extend her gratitude and appreciation to all the staff at the Windsor House for being so kind and compassionate to her father.
