YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will begin Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church, for Edward M. Toporcer, 90, who died Thursday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, surrounded by his family.
Edward was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Youngstown, the son of Martin and Susan (Slanina) Toporcer.
He was a graduate of Chaney High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Edward worked as an electrician for IBEW Local 64, and was a union member for 60 years. Edward was also a member of the Saxon Club, and an assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 46.
He enjoyed playing bocce and gardening, and loved nature, especially deer watching in his back yard.
Edward is survived by his wife, the former Louise Liga, whom he married May 23, 1964; two daughters, Denice (Shannon) Morrison of Columbus and Christine (Kenneth) Johnson of Madison; a son, Todd Toporcer of Struthers; sisters Helen Mamrak and Irene Lance; eight grandchildren, with Ryan K.E. Johnson currently serving overseas in the U.S. Army; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Mary Garchar and Catherine Kulik.
Family and friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
