Elaine Mazur

POLAND - Prayers will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church, for Elaine Mary Ellen Geoghan Mazur, 87, who died Tuesday afternoon at Hospice House.

Elaine was born June 3, 1929, in Detroit, the daughter of James R. and Arlene (Lynch) Geoghan.

She was a graduate of St. Gregory High School and earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Detroit.

Elaine began her teaching career at St. Rita School in Detroit. Elaine and her husband, Joseph, moved to the Youngstown area in 1964, and she taught kindergarten at the Holy Family School for many years. She also was a substitute teacher.

Elaine started the first girls basketball team at Holy Family and also coached girls softball in Poland.

She was involved in pastoral care at St. Elizabeth Hospital and a member of the Ann Seton Club.

She was very proud of her Catholic faith and was a longtime member of the Holy Family Church.

In her spare time, Elaine enjoyed playing bridge, traveling around the world and to college Bowl games, especially the Oklahoma Sooners.

Above all, Elaine's greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother, and she was an amazing cook.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Joseph Nicholas Mazur, whom she married Aug. 21, 1954; two daughters, Maureen Weetman (James Kelly) of Poland and Colleen Mazur (AC McMillion) of Poland; three sons, Joseph (Jennifer) Mazur of Baltimore, Dr. James (Colleen) Mazur of Salisbury, N.C., and Timothy (Theresa) Mazur of Georgetown, Texas; and 11 grandchildren, Mariah (Samuel) Taylor, Michael and Stephen Mazur, Julie Mazur, James, Joseph and Jessica Weetman and Zach and Christopher McMillion.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Family and friends may call Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center in and the staff at Hospice House for the care and compassion given to Elaine.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested material tributes take the form of donations to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.

Burial will take place at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
