YOUNGSTOWN - A Memorial Mass was celebrated for Elizabeth H. "Betty" Connors on May 11, 2013 at St. Edward Parish, who passed away on Septmeber 10, 2012. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Austintown with internment at Calvary Cemetery.
Mrs. Connors was born January 8, 1919, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Curtin) Varley. She was a 1937 graduate of South High School and attended Youngstown College. Betty was employed by Republic Steel Corp. during WW II, J.C. Penney Co., Physicians and Hospital Credit Union, and retired from Mahoning County Welfare Department.
She was active in many community organizations and affiliated with several church groups at St. Edward and St. Joseph Parishes. She was a member of the Ladies Guild, Golden Agers, and charter organizer of God's Footprints Bereavement Ministry at St. Joseph, Austintown. Betty volunteered for several years at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Her husband, Thomas J. Connors, who she married July 31, 1943, passed away on January 10, 1998.
She is survived by a son, Jack (Genevieve) of Colorado Springs, CO, a daughter, Patricia Higgens (Jim deceased) of Poland, OH and a daughter, Nancy Corbett (Rick) of Scottsdale, AZ and three grandchildren, Michael Connors of New York, NY, Meaghan Corbett of Seattle, WA , and Kevin Corbett of Santa Monica, CA.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Anne M. Newman ( Youngstown) and Genevieve McCloskey (Cleveland), and a brother, Paul Varley, killed in WW II.
