YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Elizabeth "Betty" L. Gender, 101, who passed away Saturday at Assumption Village.
Betty was born May 9, 1916, in New Castle, Pa., a daughter of the late, John and Mary (Kovalek) Yatsko.
Betty graduated from New Castle High School. In her younger years, she worked for Shenango China in New Castle. She served as a secretary for Bishop Mallone in the Dioceses of Youngstown for many years. Betty was a devout catholic and a member of St. Christine Church. Betty enjoyed cooking for her family and was a great baker. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband. Her greatest love and devotion was for her family.
Her husband, Joseph P. Gender, whom she married Aug. 17, 1946, passed away Feb. 7, 2010.
Betty leaves her daughter, Elaine (Dennis) Doinoff of Tempe, Ariz.; three sons, Thomas Gender of Phoenix, Richard (Bonnie) Gender of Winter Springs, Fla., and Terry (Betty Sutton) Gender of Newtown, Pa..; a daughter-in-law, Alice Gender of Phoenix; eight grandchildren, Tom (Vicki), Kris, Sandy, Laura, Steve (Pam), Cherie (Russell), Matthew, and Eric; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her five siblings, John Yatsko, Mary Toth, Ann Uram, Pauline Sniezek, and Helen Wenda.
Family and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
