Elizabeth Turjanica

AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Friday at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, for Elizabeth J. Turjanica, 92, who died peacefully, Holy Saturday afternoon, at home, surrounded by her family.

Elizabeth was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Uniontown, Pa., the daughter of Anthony and Anna (Jancosec) Bartos.

She was a 1940 graduate of North Union High School, Uniontown, Pa. She received a Bachelor of Education degree from Youngstown State University and a Master of Education degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. Elizabeth worked as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years and taught at Byzantine Catholic Central School, St. Dominic School in Youngstown, Jefferson School in Niles and Lincoln Elementary School in Niles. Elizabeth was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church Rosary Society. She loved music and played the piano, organ and violin. She served as organist for several years at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Chapel in Vienna. She especially loved God, her family, pets, teaching children and inspiring them to read. She also loved to travel and had the opportunity to travel through Europe, Eastern Europe, North Africa, Canada, and Mexico. The highlight of her travel was visiting Israel and the Holy Land for her retirement.

Her husband, Harold, whom she married June 16, 1956, died May 18, 2009, after 53 years of marriage.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Mary Ann Turjanica and Charles Turjanica, both of Austintown.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ramsey, Rose Kamzik, Anna Stull, Katherine McVey, and Jean John; and two brothers, Frank and Anthony Jr. Bartos.

Family and friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
