Emma Scharsu

YOUNGSTOWN - Emma L. Scharsu, 98, died peacefully Saturday, March 9, 2024 at The Aventura Humility House surrounded by her loving family. 

Emma was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Grove City, PA, the daughter of John and Mary (Briggs) Breese. 

She was a 1943 graduate of Grove City High School and after graduation she worked at The Cooper Bessemer Corporation of Grove City for 13 years as a secretary.  She also worked as a secretary for the Austintown Schools for many years. 

Emma was a devoted homemaker to her family. She enjoyed swimming, roller/ice skating, reading, playing Bingo and completing jigsaw puzzles. Emma also enjoyed getting together often with her card club. While her children were growing up, she found joy in cheering on her sons at their track and cross country meets.

She was a former member of the Mahoning United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City. 

Emma's husband, George Scharsu, whom she married Feb. 18, 1956, died May 13, 2014.

Emma is survived by her sons, Douglas (Rachelle) Scharsu of Canfield and Alan (Emily) Scharsu of Mooresville, NC; sister, Helen “Scottie” Ferguson of Grove City; brother, Paul Breese of Grove City and grandchildren; Abigail and Benjamin Scharsu.  She is also survived by nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Isabel Coast and Anna Jane "Midge" Daugherty; and brother William Breese. 

Family and friends may call Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 5 to 7 pm and Friday from 10 to 11 am at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.   

A funeral service will be held Friday, March 22, 2024 at 11 am at the funeral home. 

Emma's family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of the Valley and Humility House for their care and compassion given to Emma, especially during her final days.
