YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Hungary Church for Eugene A. "Gene" Barko, 82, who passed away Sunday after a long, courageous battle with bone cancer.
Gene was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Youngstown, the son of Stephen and Anne Cherney Barko, and was raised on the West side.
He was a center on the Chaney football team and later graduating from Chaney High School in 1945 and from Youngstown State University in 1951 with a BSBA degree.
He was a member of the church and Phi Beta Capa fraternity. He was a band leader and a trumpet player, appearing with his 18-piece band at local church and social events in his youth, as well as playing in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Barko's military experiences were a source of pride to him and his family while serving in the U.S. Navy, Naval Reserves, Merchant Marines and being named a Captain in the Auxiliary Coast Guard later in life.
Gene retired from the Ohio/Pa Auto Auction as a Sales Manager. He brought his love of boats and the water into his career by becoming a Sales Manager and Boat Broker for several marinas in Ohio and Florida. Mr. Barko was a well-known Advertising Account Executive with local radio stations WKBN and WFMJ, as well as Florida's WINO and WSUN.
Gene enjoyed his hobbies that included boating and his cars. Along with being a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan, he was a member of the Saxon Club, Austintown Eagles Club and the Grocery Manufacturer's Association.
His beloved wife, Shirley Aey Barko, whom he married in 1972, passed away in 1988. Left to carry on his memory are his children, Beth Barko of Boardman, Paul Barko of Venice, Fla., and Thomas Barko of Cincinnati; and his brother, Robert Barko Sr. of Youngstown. Mr. Barko is also survived by his stepchildren, Michelle Jaminet and Sherri Jaminet Scarborough, both of Florida, Susan Kathy Jaminet of Michigan and Jennifer Eric Nielson of Canfield; as well as seven grandchildren and a niece and nephew.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; stepson Michael Jaminet; an infant sister, Blanche; his brother; John Miller; and his former wife, Emily Jane Barko.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, 3701 Starr's Centre Drive in Canfield.
Funeral Services will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home and continue at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Hungary Church, 545 N. Belle Vista Ave. in Youngstown, on Wednesday morning, August 18.
