YOUNGSTOWN — Eugene “Gene” S. Bova, 95, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024.
Born to Frank and Rose Christiano Bova on Jan. 1, 1929, he was the first baby to arrive in Youngstown that year.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Youngstown College, Gene began a distinguished career as a mechanical engineer. He worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and J&L Specialty Steel Products. He furthered his studies at Youngstown State University and the University of Pittsburgh.
On Oct. 12, 1957, Gene married Lois Chirichigno at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Together they built a beautiful life of love and faith. They shared 63 years of marriage until her passing in March 2021. The life they created was an example for their children.
Gene was very active in the Youngstown Jaycees, where he engaged with young professionals striving to make a positive impact in their communities. He was a lifelong member of St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Parish. At the parish, Gene devoted much of his time serving as a lector and participating actively in the parish council.
Gene is survived by his children, Juliana (J. Michael) Eggiman of Columbus, Jeanne (Michael) Herman of Canfield and Frank (Michele) Bova of Boardman. He also leaves five grandchildren, Andrew and Lexy Herman, Michael Eggiman, and Maria and Geno Bova.
In addition to his wife and parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Bova.
Gene’s unwavering devotion to his family, his remarkable work ethic and his jovial personality made him the cornerstone of his family.
Calling hours will be held 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Parish, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Youngstown State University Foundation and Hospice of the Valley.
